Grove

grove.gif Grove was purchased with money from an Information Technology Research (ITR) grant from the Natioinal Science Foundation entitled Building the Tree of Life -- A National Resource for Phyloinformatics and Computational Phylogenetics awarded to Dr. David Swofford. The project aims to "establish a national computational resource to move the research community much closer to the realization of the goal of the Tree of Life initiative, namely, to reconstruct the evolutionary history of all organisms. This goal is the computational Grand Challenge of evolutionary biology." More information on this work can be found at the project web site http://www.phylo.org. The primary purpose of the grove cluster is to provide a platform for developing and testing software to run on Beowulf-class clusters and to have a mid-level analysis machine for short-term visitors working on this project.

The current hardware configuration consists of the following:

  • 1 head node configured with:
    • 1 Gigabytes of RAM
    • Dual G5 2.0 GHz
    • 234 GB of local storage
    • Single Gigabit Ethernet interface
  • 63 compute nodes configured with:
    • 1 Gigabyte of RAM
    • Dual G5 2.0 Ghz
    • Approximately 80 GB of local disk space
    • Single Gigabit Ethernet interface
