Stella was purchased from startup funds for Dr. Nymeyer provided by the FSU research foundation. Stella is dedicated to the development of newer, faster methods for biomolecular simulation and the application of those methods to a wide range of biological systems. These systems span the range from small carbohydrates, peptides and proteins with a few hundred atoms to biological membranes with tens of thousands of atoms. The goal of this research is to understand and predict structure, dynamics and function solely from the local, physical and chemical properties. Current projects involve understanding carbohydrate structure, determining "error bars" for the newest generation of molecular force fields, studying the origin of protein folding rates and folding mechanisms, studying the physical properties of biological membranes, and understanding how small molecules and proteins interact with and modulate these properties.
